Facebook Fan Page Misconception

We arrive at our “F” in the A-Z local business marketing strategy. What is the biggest Facebook fan page misconception from a Facebook business page owner’s point of view?

Many local businesses I talk to have a large number of “likes” on their Facebook fan page. Fortunately, this is an asset that is used for future marketing and targeting of offers, events and specials.

Peer to peer review is the heart of social media. These Facebook fan pages provide the local business owners an avenue to communicate on a regular basis with prospects and customers.

Unfortunately, there is a hidden, not talked about, downside to the fan pages. Think Facebook stock. Think profits. Remember advertising revenue for Wall Street.

As of this writing, the latest data available indicates that only between 2% and 6% of the TOTAL number of likes is sent out with an update from you. Let this sink in. If you have 1,000 “likes” on your page, when you send out a special, discount or update, at best around 60 people will see it on their feed!

Depending on the time of day, the day of the week and the other events happening around the world demanding space on the feed, yours may only hit 30 people. That can be demoralizing to say the least.

Why is this happening? Since the company went public and had to account for revenue and stock prices, the “reach” (what we call the number of people shown your message) has gone from 16-20% to 2-6%.

Facebook is a business after all. As a result, they make their money by delivering ads. So, like it or not, you are at their mercy to advertise and reach your followers.

What are the options?

All is not lost. With proper setup, tweaking and testing, you can deliver your message not only to all of your followers but NEW prospects as well for pennies.

I routinely get “eye balls” or views for $0.008 each! That’s right, less than a penny per view. It is all a matter of knowing how to do it and testing.
